Toilet repair & maintenance
Unblocking a toilet
In most instances a clogged toilet
can be fixed by using a plunger, but make sure to have
sufficient water in toilet bowl when using the plunger.
If the plunger does not clear the
clogged drain, use a drain auger or sewer snake.
If neither the plunger or
drain auger, nor the snake removes the obstruction, it may be necessary
to remove the toilet from the floor, turn it upside down and force
the obstruction out from the top or bottom. The toilet must then
be correctly reseated.
Water is leaking through the handle
Reposition the float ball, If the float ball is
too high it will allow water to run into the overflow pipe and out
of the handle.
Shorten
overflow pipe, If the overflow pipe is too long you can use a saw
to shorten it. The pipe should be at least 25mm below the handle.
Water
is leaking around the flush valve
If the flush-valve assembly is damaged you will
need to replace it. You might first try replacing the gasket over
the locknut on the assembly and then the assembly itself.
Water
is leaking from the shutoff valve
If water is
leaking from around the shutoff valve you can use an adjustable
wrench to tighten the coupling or use PFTE tape to seal
leak.
